My Story - ACYR Speaker Support

A video, manual and PowerPoint resource for ACYR speakers.

My Story cover

The AIDS Committee of York Region (ACYR) identified a need to formalize communications training to enhance volunteer capacity.

Currently our Speakers’ Bureau, Board Volunteers, Events/Fundraising Volunteers as well as staff are engaged in delivering messages about the work of the agency. While the individuals are associated with the organization and have rich lived experience, many of us have not had the benefit of formal communications training.

This training manual resource is aimed at building broad-based skills for all volunteers and staff at different levels of the organization in the area of public speaking and delivering focused, consistent messages.

The manual does refer to ACYR, but please feel free to substitute the name of your agency for your training purposes.

Objective of the Training Manual

This manual is designed for the speakers of the AIDS Committee of York Region’s Speakers‘ Bureau Program (aimed at raising awareness of HIV/AIDS), Board Volunteers, Events/Fundraising Volunteers, as well as staff of the agency to ensure that every speaker effectively represents the ACYR to the communities we serve by delivering messages consistent with the goals of the organization.

This training resource will support all staff and volunteers as well as develop a model of best practice.

Positivity is ACYR's 20-minute film that showcases the lives of women living with and impacted by HIV in York Region. The four women featured in the film show courage and resiliency as they share their intimate stories in the hopes of getting the powerful message out that there is life after an HIV diagnosis. Produced for the AIDS Committee of York Region. This expanded version of Positivity was launched on World AIDS Day 2011.
